The Clinical Experience

Student practicing osteopathy on a fellow student in the CAO's student clinic
Students gain experience working in the student clinic as well as practicing on real patients in our free osteopathy clinic

The CAO Aims To Meet And Exceed International Standards!

Whether our students are working with fellow students in our practice clinic or treating real-life patients in our free public clinic, they are getting the first-hand experience they need to practice safe, effective, and ethical manual osteopathy in their career.

All students are required to complete supervised clinical training & practice before graduation. This takes place in dedicated clinical environments–our under-year clinic as well as our upper-year clinic–that are insured and supervised by professional Osteopathic Manual Practitioners.

Patients in the community come to the clinic for assessments or ongoing care, providing students the opportunity to give back to the community while simultaneously progressing through their education, developing clinical skills and client relationships in an environment that benefits all.

Recently, we reached a milestone surpassing 100,000 free treatments to the public. That’s over 8 million dollars in osteopathic care!

In our under-year clinic, students will:

  • Practice interview & intake procedures
  • Learn to report patient history
  • Understand how to catch red flags, signs or symptoms of the body
  • Practice assessing & treating fellow students

This under-year clinical practicum provides our students with the confidence necessary to be a professional in the clinical environment. On top of this, they get a strong foundation of skills and techniques that prepare them for the upper-year clinical experience, where they will hone in on these important clinical skills and experience.

In our upper-year clinic, students will:

  • Hone in on observing & evaluating patients
  • Take the lead on real patient treatments
  • Deliver real results to real patients of osteopathy
  • Foster relationships

Students in their upper-years of the osteopathy program will also complete the CAO Apprenticeship as teacher assistants in our under-year clinic and the classroom lab. This is their chance to monitor and instruct other students, and gain a practical understanding of the osteopathy clinical practice as a whole.
