The Canadian Academy of Osteopathy (CAO) enjoys a long-standing reputation as a qualified institution dedicated to training students for the field of osteopathy. Our goal is to give students the skills, experience and credentials to launch a fulfilling career in an osteopathy practice.
Since our program is designed for students looking to work while they learn, our training schedule is able to accommodate the needs of working professionals. At the same time, you can rest assured that you’ll cover a comprehensive curriculum that will prepare you for specialized work in osteopathy. Here’s a closer look at what healthcare workers can expect from our program!
Apply Your Health Sciences Education to Your Osteopathy Specialization
One of the many advantages of training at the CAO is that students with a background in Health Sciences can bypass our Prep course and begin their osteopathy training directly. We offer a program that takes their experience into account and allows them to use their prior knowledge as a prerequisite. Many students who have graduated from a university or college program in Health Sciences will be eligible for this pathway, including graduates of programs such as Human Kinetics, Biological Medicine, Pre-Med and Life Sciences.
Likewise, if you’re currently practising in the healthcare field, you may also be eligible to skip the Prep Course and move straight into training for your osteopathy specialization. This applies to professionals in careers such as Massage or Athletic Therapist, Physiotherapist or Chiropractor, Physician, Paramedic, Nurse or Healthcare Assistant. Depending on your prior knowledge, we’ll provide you with a Preparation Manual and online resources to help you review the necessary material and make sure you’re prepared to jump right in.
Take a Holistic Approach to Osteopathy
The Osteopathy program at the CAO consists of a two-fold hands-on approach with a curriculum that aims to meet and exceed the World Health Organization’s standards for education in osteopathy. To do so, we offer a combination of clinical and classroom semesters that gives students the chance to develop their practical techniques while building a solid understanding of the principles and theory that underlie osteopathic practices.
For students with a foundation in Health Sciences, this is an opportunity to direct their knowledge towards the specialized osteopathy field. You’ll have the chance to practise with fellow students in classroom labs, as well as while working with patients in the CAO’s free public Osteopathy Clinic under professor supervision. With a principles-based education at our osteopathy academy, you’ll be ready to translate your healthcare knowledge into a specialized career.
Flexible Schedules for Working Professionals
At the CAO, we understand and meet the needs of working professionals. Many of our students are already working full-time or part-time in healthcare while completing their education. To accommodate this, we offer a flexible schedule that allows you to continue to work while studying.
During the classroom semester, students attend five days of class each month, three of them online via Zoom and two of them in person. During the clinical semester, clinical days are grouped together for added convenience. In an adaptable environment, you can focus on getting the experience to practice safe, effective and ethical osteopathy in your career.
